Ocotal is the capital of Nueva Segovia district and located at the base of Sierra de Diplito, the highest mountain of Nicaragua (2107m). As well it is the closest city to the Honduran border. In the center of this town an impressive church is to be found close to one of the most beautiful squares in the country.

The greatest source of income for the population is pine tree plantation and mining.

Located close to the city center is Ciudad Antigua, this is an old town with an antique church with Spanish naves, which were transported on the River Coco. Additionally you can visit a museum with pieces of art from the pre-Colombian era. Those interested in art and ceramics should visit Mozonte, a traditional indigenous assent. Mozonte is famous for its shops where you can observe the artists perform their skills and buy their productions at reasonable prices.
