The capital of Nicaragua has approximately one million inhabitants, a number that is constantly increasing. There is no doubt this is the economical and political center of the country. The principal bank offices, shopping centers and the best nightlife are to be found in this town.

Managua is located at an altitude of only 50 meters above sea level, by Lake of Managua and extending 20 kilometers in length, to the mountains of Managua.

Places of interests are:

  • The Central Park
  • "La Plaza de la Fe"
  • The ruins of the Cathedral of Santiago
  • The National Palace of Culture
  • The National Museum
  • The National Theatre

The Museum of footprints of Acahualinca is the most important archeological site in Nicaragua. Here we can find tracks from more than 6000 years ago, which proves the human presence in Managua and Central America, during this period.

"Mercado Huembes" is one of the most colourful markets and something that you have to visit while being in Managua. There you will as well find the important events "Festival of Music and Youth", taking place in March, and the "Fiestas Angostinas", which are celebrated in August.

Due to its low altitude, the climate of Managua is always hot, varying between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius. The months of December and January are a little cooler than March and April.

Part of Managua's history is the earthquake that, in 1972, destroyed a great part of the town. The new town was constructed in the vicinity of the old, which creates remarkable contrasts.
