Those villages got their names from their white painted walls and colourful doors. They are popular because of their authentic and old culture. The traditions of those villages have been maintained thanks to the tribes of Chorotegas and Mangue, present in the region since the era of the colonization.

San Juan de Oriente is famous because of its marvelous ceramics, Catarina for its spectacular viewing point, from which you can admire the Lagoon of Apoyo, the Lake of Nicaragua and the city of Granada, Dioriomo produces the popular Cajeta de Leche (similar to fudge) and Diria is well known for its legends about witches. Other "White Towns" are Niquinohomo, Nandasmo and Masatepe. In Jinotepe, San Marcos and Diaramba you can visit the famous Festival Gueguense, which takes place the 19 th and 20 th of January.
